The Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) requires all psychologists to hold registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Once registered, some psychologists choose to apply to the PsyBA for an area of endorsement in one or more of nine endorsement areas.
Psychologists with general registration can be endorsed in one or more of the following approved areas of practice:
According to AHPRA, as of December 2021 there were 42,657 psychologists in Australia. Over the past 15 years, there has been an increase in representative bodies distinguishing between psychologists with a clinical area of endorsement and all other psychologists. This has resulted in a commonly held misconception that psychologists with clinical endorsement (who make up only 25% of all psychologists), hold greater qualifications, expertise and competency than the remaining 75% of their colleagues.
It is worth noting that there is no difference in outcomes for clients of registered psychologists with clinical area of endorsement versus registered psychologists without this area of endorsement. If you wish to confirm the registration of any psychologist, you can check this on the publicly available AHPRA website, at this link;
Christine and Sharon are approved providers of psychological support services, within the Queensland Police Services, Self Refer service www.selfrefer.org.au and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Support Network - FESSN
